MTNL to Begin 3G Commercialization on February 5

State-owned telecom operator MTNL (Mahanagar Telecom Nigam Ltd.) announced the commercialization of 3G services on February 5, initially in central Delhi, later to Gurgaon, the Economic Times of India reported. Service coverage initially includes Connaught Place, India Gate, Pragati Maidan, Delhi Gate and Minto Road. Further details of MTNL's 3G commercialization were yet to be revealed.

Another state-owned telecom operator BSNL (Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd.), which was set to launch 3G services in Chennai in January 2009, expects to resume the commercialization of its 3G services soon. However, the company is yet to disclose the revised launch schedule, according to the same source.

Meanwhile, India's 3G spectrum auction for private telecom operators has been postponed for the second times. The auction, which was originally scheduled to take place in early January, 2009, had been deferred to January 16, 2009. India's DoT (Department of Telecommunications) is yet to specify the auction date for 3G spectrum though, according again to the Economic Times.
